Hola a todos!
Hi all!

Celebrating my new number 100 in Eureka! we have some advice for you to became a better painter and increase your level. Which things are really important to improve our painting level?

Everybody has started painting miniatures because of games as Warhammer, W40K, infinity or maybe older games as Hero Quest or Space Hulk. We painted the miniatures as well as we can imagining they were the beautiful ones showed in the pictures of the manual or in the White Dwarf.

A lot of those player painters want to improve their painting level to paint their miniatures. If you want to do the same here it is a little guide of the most important steps to become a better painter.

The Painting table is necessary for became a better painter. You should have your own space for painting. Having a fix place to paint with all the material prepared, help you to take advantage of any moment for painting, even if it's only a few minutes.

http://eurekaminiature.blogspot.com.es/2014/06/tutorial-paleta-humeda-wet-palette.html

At least it has to be equipped with:
- Cutting Mat: to avoid damages in the table when preparing miniature or using glue.
- Lamps: You should use white light in your lamps. You can use two lights to avoid making shadows in your miniatures when you are painting. There are also big long lamps that also avoid the shadows. Also it's important don't use to much light, because they burn the real color and make the miniature brighter than what it is in the reality.
- Wet Palette: is important that it have a cover to avoid the evaporation. You can build it using a Ferrero Roche box or using another box. Here it is a tutorial for preparing it:
http://eurekaminiature.blogspot.com.es/2014/06/tutorial-paleta-humeda-wet-palette.html
- Kitchen towel: for download the brush paint and whatever that can happens.
- Water: we should have 2 glasses with water, one for clean water and another one for the dirty water. Also we can have a third one for metallic colors.
- Some Tools: also we usually use a cutter and some sand paper to prepare the miniatures. P1000 and P500 of water sand paper are my favorites.

Pinturas y pinceles/Paintings and brushes

Pinceles/brushes

Is very important use a good brush. It's mandatory that the tip should be sharp to get good results, so you have to buy Marta Kolinsky brushes, in special I recomend W&N ones (Winsor and Newton), number 0 or 1, because they have a lot of body, and a very good tip. This brushes are expensive, about 11 euros, but it will last about half a year or even more and the tip doesn't breaks, so at the end are very cheap. Without any doubt is the MOST IMPORTANT part to become a better painter (and in a lot of miniature shops they haven't):

If you can, try to buy the better matterial that you can. Is more efficient having a good brush than having a lot of paints. If the brush tip is not sharp is almost imposible having good results.

Here you are some links about the brush:

Imprimaciones/Primer

We usually primer the miniatures before painting using two ways to do it:

- Using spray: after testing some brands, the Games Workshop sprays are the best, although they are more expensive. They are the only ones that have matt finish from the begining until the end.

- Using airbrush: Vallejo primer is very good and it has a very smooth finish. Is available in tree colors:

Pinturas/Paints

We can talk a lot of time about the different paint brands available. Focusing in the acrylic comercial ones, the main brands available for miniatures are: Games Workshop, vallejo, andrea and scale75.
Let see what is the best of each one:

Andrea: this brand sell their paints in sets of 6 colors, and sometimes in contests they sell them individually. The most interesting pack for me is the flesh paint set. It also contains a short guide to use them, very useful for beginners. They also sell the white and black paint set, very useful for beginners because this colors are very dificult to paint. This paintings are very thick, so it must be diluitd a lot.

Vallejo: this brand has different types, but the most used one is Model Color. It has a lot of different colors, so this range has almost all colors. It also has a lot of militar tones for historical miniatures. Avoid buy red tones (but vermellon) because they are too much glazed. The rest of colors works fine, being the best the ice yellow, green blue, chocolate brown and orange brown.

Games Workshop: it has their paints classified by types, but the better ones are the layer because the dilution is the best. It has a lot of saturated colors (better than vallejo), being better for bright colors as yellow, orange and white. Their metallic colors are also very good.

Scale75: This paintings are new in the miniature world, but they are different from the other ones for its matt finish. They also sell them in kits or individually. They are very thick so you have to dilute them a lot. The most useful kit for me is the MNM grey kit. Pink and purples are also great.

Otras cosas/Other things

Also we use inks for gain saturation. Andrea inks set was almost the unique option in shops, and they are very good option, because they are very strong and the kit allows to create any color. Recently another brands as Liquitex and Scale75 sell also inks, very strongs also and with a lot of saturated colors.

Liquitex has very beautiful purple tones, while scale75 has pretty orange and brown tones. Andrea is a wildcard, but maybe we have used to use them because they are in shops a long time ago, but for beginners is the better option.

Washes are also used, mainly for bases or less detailed works, and its main difference from the ink is its matt finish. Its colors are less saturated. Vallejo washes are the best matt finish in the market. Games workshop has also washes but they have less quality.

Miniaturas/Miniatures

Could be something obvious, but the miniature election can help us to learn. We usually save the best miniatures, wating for a future moment when we will be better painters, and we paint another miniatures with less quality and detail. The result is worse but not for our painting, is because of the sculpture or the detail. So is important painting miniatures that we love it but they have good casting, and also paint scales greater than 28mm, because they help us in the mounting phase, in the painting and the final result will be better.
It will be always miniatures that we will love, so don't wait to paint them!

Also is important select a miniature that motivate us a lot. A painting project could take more than 1 month, and keep the motivation is difficult. So don't paint a miniature just for being popular or because it will like to other people, paint a miniature that you really love it.

Algunas marcas de miniaturas increibles:

Libros/Books

A lot of painters has published their own how to paint books. For me the best and more complete is the one published by Jérémie Bonamant called FIGOPEDIA (french or english):

Another great book to learn is the one published by Angel Giraldez where he explains how to paint infinity miniatures, but his masterclass can be applied to another miniatures:

Another book in spanish is the one published by Antonio Fernandez Lizaso (Piqui) called "Historias en Miniatura" that goes one step over and explain us how to ambient a miniature or composition concepts.

Internet

There are many internet pages about miniature painting. The ones that have more tutorials are:

For watching the other painter miniatures, the two most important pages are:

Cursos/Courses

Attending to a painting course, although in a beginner level, is very important. You can increase your level as if you were painting months and it will also allow you to know another painters that will help you.

A lot of renamed painters make courses of several levels (Zwo, Volomir, etc) and even at the shops there are free courses or they are very cheap (Goblintrader, quimera, etc). Look for one and do it, you will no regret.

Puntos clave/ Key points

If you keep painting and you add the painting time as a part of your day, the success is almost sure! I don't know anybody that applying all that we have talk haven't became a great painter.
Is true that you will not became into Roman Lappat or Banshee, but they are your references to improve, don't try to be they!

Also a lot of painters get frustrated for trying to be great painters very fast. It's impossible to reach their level because they were painting many years ago (and they are genius), so we have to evaluate our works comparing them with our previous works, no comparing them with the best paint ever of the same miniature. If we have improve our painting since last miniature, we can be sure that we are walking the road to the success. Go step by step.

Everybody have an own speed in learning techniques. You can see other painters go faster than you, but it doesn't matters, you have to compare only with yourself.

An easy way to improve is introduce a new challenge in each new work. Some painters only paints elfs, or Marines, and they reach the perfection in that kind of miniature, but they didn't learn how to be a good painter. Each new project has to be a new opportunity to learn something new. However, try it one by one. Don't try some new techniques in a new miniature because if you fail , you will fail a lot. Be patient, the success is there.

In my personal case here it is a miniature from 3 years ago and one for this year:

Animo y a darle a los pinceles!
I encourage you to don't give up painting!

  1. Great tips. Also, paint everything, every genre and scale AND join some forums if you can't get to workshops. There are plenty of great painters out there who can help you out online :) I gamed for 20 years and then I decided to quit and become a display painter - it took me another 2 years to get an invite P&P and another year before i got my first set of 9's on CMON and i am still learning every single day :)
